How Ronnie Coleman won the Mr. Olympia
Coleman's breakthrough remains one of the Olympia's striking turnarounds. He finished ninth in 1997, then returned the following year to defeat the field and win his first Sandow. He held the title through 2005, with challengers including Flex Wheeler, Kevin Levrone and Jay Cutler, who finally beat him in 2006.
Physique, posing and influence
Coleman became synonymous with extraordinary muscular size and widely circulated heavy training footage. His competitive appearances pushed the discussion about mass, conditioning and symmetry into a new era of bodybuilding.
A defining Olympia moment
His run from ninth place in 1997 to champion in 1998—and then to eight straight victories—illustrates how quickly competitive status can change when an athlete brings a dramatically improved package.
