How Dorian Yates won the Mr. Olympia
Yates finished second to Lee Haney at the 1991 Olympia. When Haney retired, Yates won his first title in 1992 and defended it five times against competitors such as Kevin Levrone, Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler and Nasser El Sonbaty.
Physique, posing and influence
His Birmingham training identity and the high-intensity approach associated with the 'Blood and Guts' era became influential in bodybuilding culture. Yates' combination of mass and detail helped define expectations for the Men's Open stage during the 1990s.
A defining Olympia moment
The handoff from Haney in 1991 to Yates in 1992 marked a visible change in the sport's championship look. After his final title in 1997, Yates retired and Ronnie Coleman took over in 1998.
